Chiropractic Care for Concussions and Dizziness
Concussions and dizziness are evaluated together here, since a neck injury is almost always part of a concussion and is often the piece that gets missed.

A concussion is a serious brain injury and should be evaluated right away, even without a loss of consciousness. Concussions are typically caused by a violent blow or sudden acceleration and deceleration, such as a car accident or sports injury, and the neck absorbs a significant share of that force.
Most people see partial recovery from a mild concussion within about two weeks, but some effects on cognitive function can linger without proper follow-up care.
Dizziness has a similar story. It can start in the eyes, the inner ear, or the top of the neck. Nerves at the top of the neck that help with balance and motion sensing can become imbalanced after an injury, creating a sense of movement when you are actually still.
Head trauma rarely stops at the skull. The neck absorbs much of the same force, and the receptors across your muscles and joints that tell the brain where your body is in space can be disrupted by it, which is often what is behind lingering balance problems.
Any suspected concussion should be assessed by a medical professional first. Upper cervical evaluation works alongside that, looking specifically at whether the neck was affected, which is frequently the source of headaches and neck pain that persist through recovery.
Common symptoms
- Headache and neck pain after a head injury
- Difficulty with memory or sluggish thinking
- Dizziness, loss of balance, or nausea
- A false sense of motion or spinning
Neck evaluation after every injury
We check the neck as part of any concussion or head trauma evaluation, not as an afterthought.
A 3-part approach
Initial exam, a customized plan of care, then treatment.
Built for recovery
Care is aimed at restoring natural movement and reducing nerve pressure tied to balance.
Concussions
Concussions are serious brain injuries and all patients should be evaluated immediately after an injury. You do not have to lose consciousness in order to have a concussion.
Concussions are caused by violent blows or excessive shaking. The most common occurrences are caused by trauma to the head causing bruising to the brain, stretching, and/or deformation of brain tissue. Sudden acceleration and deceleration, as in a car accident or a sports injury, accounts for the majority of cases.
A concussion takes on average 95 G’s of force. A neck injury only takes 4 G’s. You cannot have a concussion without injuring your neck. Neck injuries are overlooked by most doctors, and injuries may go undetected for years. It is vital to receive proper care immediately after an injury.
Symptoms of a concussion include headache, neck pain, difficulty with memory, sluggish thinking, altered mood, dizziness, loss of balance, nausea, ringing in the ears, and loss of the five senses.
Treating concussions
Most people partially recover from a mild concussion within 2 weeks. However, there are often lingering effects on cognitive function and some injuries just do not recover without proper help. Proper treatment for concussions includes a proper evaluation and plan of treatment.

Dizziness
It is not fun when objects around you keep moving, even though you are standing still. This is the feeling known as dizziness. Dizziness starts in three main places: eyes, ears, and top of the neck.
Dizziness can be caused by accidents or injuries that restrict the body’s natural movement. The nerves located at the top of your neck become imbalanced, which prevents your sense of motion from creating balance and stability. This creates the sensation of being in motion when you are not moving.
Symptoms of dizziness include headaches, lightheadedness, feeling faint, a false sense of spinning, unsteadiness, loss of balance, or a feeling of floating or swimming.

Treating dizziness
The doctors at Begin Within Family Wellness will address problems stemming from the neck. Precise upper cervical care works to restore your body’s natural movement, decrease nerve pressure, and create postural stability. In fact, many patients report feeling more grounded after adjustments.
